Helping with linoleum art
Armstrong charity campaign in South Africa

Sustainability is no empty phrase for Armstrong - on the contrary, it has been part of its corporate culture for years. This includes social commitment that embodies the values of the floor covering manufacturer and the convictions of its workforce.

That is why, in April 2008, Armstrong, together with AIT, invited a group of internationally successful architects to a charity workshop in Cape Town. The architect Caren Smuts erected the Guga S'Thebe cultural centre in one of the oldest townships. The activities on offer in this facility are aimed in particular at children and adolescents, but also at adults and the aged in order to get them off the streets for at least a couple of hours.

Over three days, the participants of the Guga S'Thebe workshops, in collaboration with about a dozen children of the "Gum Boot Dance" dance group and the artist Roderick Saul, made numerous linocuts for a large art calendar that makes South Africa and the 2010 Football World Cup the focus of attention. It not only contains colourful linocuts but also precisely formulated impressions of their stay in Langa as written by the participants.

Since Armstrong expressly regards the art calendar as a charity campaign, the company requests that those who receive a calendar via the Armstrong sales department make a donation to the Nomzamo AIDS orphanage of the Langa Township in Cape Town.
